Working Life of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Study Finds

Per recent study, the median earner in the UK would need half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the richest 10% of the population.

Expanding Financial Divide Through the Years

This research analyzed net worth data covering the recent health crisis years and found that back in the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years of typical employment income to reach the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

An economic expert associated with the study commented: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker saving all their earnings throughout their career would still not be able to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The analysis found that the difference between the assets of the typical individual and an individual in the top 10% was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3 million in real terms by recent times.

The researcher further stated: "These differences are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is restricted – those who commence life affluent tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the economic divide expanding in absolute terms, the percentage of total wealth in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "comparative financial divide" – has been "broadly stable since the eighties," according to the study.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from three times the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "unearned" gains, through growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the growing financial disparity since 2010, as stated in the analysis.

These appreciations generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Variations

Additionally, there were pronounced regional variations, with the median value of assets in 2020-22 standing at £290k in the SE of England, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and pandemic lockdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The typical family in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
