The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
